Back Stitch

Plain Back Stitch

When someone says back stitch, this is what they mean. The “back” in back stitch has to do with the motion of the hand as you work. This is probably the strongest of the hand sewing stitches for making seams. It takes a bit longer than other stitches, but if you know the seam will be under stress, it is definitely the way you want to go.

Reverse Back Stitch

Structurally, this stitch is the same as regular back stitch. The difference lies in the direction of the movement. In standard back stitch, the seam is sewn from right to left with a series of small stitches on top that look similar to machine sewing. This stitch is worked from the “Wrong” side of a regular back stitch and when it is worked, it resembles a cord lying on top of the fabric, similar to the appearance of the “stem stitch” in embroidery.
